Dolomites: Mountains and Milky Way

Tour Information

Jagged mountain peaks, serene mountain lakes, breath-taking vistas and epic dark night skies! Expect all these things and more on this incredible 8 Day / 7 Night Photography workshop in the Italian Dolomites.

The Dolomites are in Northern Italy, spread across a huge area and on the border between Austria and Italy. They cover more than 300,000 acres, and include 18 famous peaks, some of the best big walls for climbing in Europe and countless charming mountain villages. The Dolomites were originally known as the Pale Mountains, and you can find some of the most fascinating rocky peaks here.

This workshop is designed to cover some of the most amazing locations in the dolomites, we will not have a fixed base, in fact we will be spending each night in a different location with the aim of shooting some incredible scenes at sunrise, at sunset and if the weather permits, we will also shoot some astrophotography shots.

We will be spending most nights in alpine mountain huts, known in Italian as a ‘Rifugio’ or ‘Refuge’ in English. This will mean that we are close to the locations we plan to photograph and can make the most of the conditions. Every day we will head out early to capture sunrise in a stunning location, if we are lucky, we will also have some pastel hues in the sky which will give us some stunning images. During the day, we will travel to our next location and have time to discuss the images we have captured throughout the trip and we will also discuss composition / light and different techniques to capture the best of the scene before us.

Highlights:

  • Photograph the classic Dolomite locations at sunrise, sunset and at night

Itinerary

Day 1

We will meet at Venice Marco Polo Airport
arrivals lounge. We will pack all luggage in to the
comfortable van and head for the heart of the
Dolomites, Val di Funes, where we will have a
quick bite to eat before checking in to our hotel.
After settling into our rooms, we will have a quick
briefing before we head out to photograph sunset
at the classic San Giovanni church. This scene is
front lit at sunset, meaning the last rays of the sun
will color the mountains in the background with
warm light. After sunset, we will head to the town
of San Pietro for dinner before heading back to
our accommodation for an early night.

Day 2

We get up early and head out to shoot sunrise at
the same location as our previous day’s sunset,
however this time the scene will be back lit, so if
we get lucky, we will have an amazing glow
silhouetting the mountain peaks above the
chapel. After sunrise, we will return to our hotel
to have breakfast and relax a bit before heading
to our next location, Seceda. We will pack our
bags and take the cable car up to the famous
Seceda area. After a quick hike to the Rifugio, we
will have lunch, check in to our rooms and rest
before getting the ski lift up to the Seceda Ridge.
We will shoot sunset here and then begin the
moderate hike back to the Rifugio. After dinner
and a drink we will get some well-deserved rest.

Day 3
We get up early once again and have various options for our sunrise location, choosing where to go depending on the weather. We will then hike back down to the Rifugio for breakfast, pack our bags and take the cable car back down to the town, where we will head to another great location, the famous mountain pass called Passo Falzarego. We will take the cable car up to Rifugio Lagazuoi where we will check in to our room at the Rifugio and rest in the afternoon before heading out for sunset. There are several different options for compositions here, as we will be based at one of the highest Rifugios in the Dolomites and will have a great view of different mountains around us. After sunset, we will attempt to shoot some astrophotography before heading to bed.

Day 4
After sunrise and breakfast, we will take the cable car down to the car park and head down to Cortina D’Ampezzo, one of the biggest towns in the area. We then begin our trip up the long winding road towards the most epic mountains in the Dolomites, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. We will stop at Lago di Misurina and Lago Antorno on the way to shoot a few shots before continuing our way up to Tre Cime. We will spend the next 2 days navigating around these imposing peaks, staying at a different Rifugio each night, which will give us the opportunity to capture this amazing location. Our first night will be spent on the East Side of Tre Cime, with some amazing mountain views all around us. After checking in and having lunch, we will head out for sunset and shoot the Tre Cime from the Forcella Lavaredo. If the sky is clear, we will wait for it to get dark before shooting the Milkyway, an absolutely incredible experience!

Day 5
After shooting sunrise from the saddle or
another location near the Rifugio and having
breakfast, we will pack our bags and begin the 1
hour hike to the next hut, for undoubtedly the
most famous view of the Tre Cime. We will
spend the night here, at the incredible Rifugio
Locatelli. This is truly the ultimate view of the
Tre Cime, and there is also the impressive Monte
Paterno and the awesome little Laghi del Piani, 2
lakes which if there is no wind, give perfect
mirror reflections. After lunch and a rest, we will
head out to shoot sunset and the night sky. This
location is probably the highlight of the whole
trip, and perfectly epitomizes the Dolomites in
all their glory.

Day 6
After shooting sunrise near the Rifugio, we will have breakfast and pack our bags. We will savour the amazing view before beginning the hour and a half hike back to the car. We will then drive back through Cortina D’Ampezzo and keep heading West to the incredible Cinque Torri (5 Towers). We will make our way to the Rifugio for lunch using Ski lifts, then scout the area before sunset. There are an unlimited number of compositions to shoot in this amazing location.

Day 7
After shooting sunrise at Cinque Torri, we will have breakfast and pack our bags. We will head
back to our van and drive to Passo Rolle, our final location. After having lunch and checking in to
our accommodation, we will head out for sunset. Our sunset shoot will be at the epic Baita
Segantini, where there is a gorgeous lake and a rifugio, dwarfed by towering peaks, most notably
the ‘Pala di San Martino’. After shooting sunset we will head for our final dinner together before
returning to our accommodation for a good nights sleep.

Day 8

We wake up to shoot the last sunrise of our mountain adventure at Baita Segantini before returning to our hotel for breakfast. We will then pack our bags and head to the airport.

We will be staying in typical mountain huts to ensure we are close to our shooting locations for both sunrise and sunset'

Mild to moderate hiking is required to reach some locations.

Our workshop guides are Red Cross CPR and First Aid certified, and we carry a two-way satellite communicator and beacon for emergencies.
